If you wash your car and run your hand over the dry paint, does it feel rough or sandy? That roughness is industrial fallout—tiny metallic shards that are chemically bonded to your clear coat.
What is Industrial Fallout?
Every time you drive, your vehicle is exposed to airborne contaminants that settle on the horizontal panels. The most common and destructive of these are iron contaminants:
- Brake Dust: Microscopic hot iron filings thrown off by your own brakes (and other vehicles) that melt directly into your clear coat.
- Rail Dust: Industrial steel dust generated by train tracks and local manufacturing plants in Northeast Ohio.
Over time, these metallic particles begin to rust, expanding inside your paint and creating microscopic pinholes that allow moisture to get under the finish, eventually causing bubbling paint.
How a Clay Bar Works
Standard car wash soaps and high-pressure sprayers cannot dislodge embedded metallic fallout. Waxing over these contaminants is even worse, as it locks them into the clear coat.
A professional clay bar treatment uses an engineered elastic clay compound. As the lubricated clay glides across your paint, it catches and cleanly pulls the embedded metal shards out of the clear coat, leaving a perfectly smooth, glassy foundation.
